Residency Program Committee (RPC) - Terms of Reference

Purpose

  1. Maintain standards of education and evaluation according to the “Objectives of Training and Specialty Training Requirements in General Surgery”.
  2. Regularly review and help optimize the clinical educational experience of our residents.
  3. Maintain the Academic Rounds Teaching Program and the Resident Research Programs.
  4. Identify problems and determine remediation.
  5. Give support to the Program Director in policy making, planning, and supervising the General Surgery Program.
  6. Evaluation Subcommittee: Review resident evaluations, determine promotions, arrange remediation as needed, and approve FITERS.
  7. Curriculum Subcommittee: Design and Review Academic Half Day and other elements of the curriculum.

Membership consists of:

  • Program Director
  • Assistant Program Director (Royal University Hospital)
  • Assistant Program Director (Regina General Hospital)
  • Surgical Foundations Director
  • Head, Division of General Surgery
  • Division Research Coordinator
  • Resident Representatives
    • Administrative Resident (R5)
    • Senior Resident Representative (R3-R5) - elected
    • Surgical Foundations Resident Representative (R1-R2) - elected
  • Recording Secretary

Chair

The RPC Meetings are chaired by the Program Director.

Frequency of Meetings

The Committee meets quarterly each academic year with special meetings called at the discretion of the Program Director (eg. CaRMS, FITERS).

Quorum and Attendance

A minimum of three attendings and two residents will serve as a quorum for the RPC. A resident member can designate a replacement resident representative if he or she is unable to attend the scheduled meeting (out of town elective or vacation, for example).

Members are to attend at least 50% of the meetings.

Reports to

The RPC reports to the Head of the Department of Surgery and the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education.

Subcommittee: The Evaluation Committee

The Evaluation Committee is a subcommittee of RPC and membership consists of the RPC Committee faculty members and one elected R4 resident representative.
