Subspecialty Residency Training Program

The General Internal Medicine (GIM) Training Program at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) is a two-year program that will prepare applicants for the diversity of careers available within internal medicine.

There is flexibility within the variety of GIM clinical and educational experiences that can be adapted to meet resident career goals.

Rotations include inpatient ward service, consultation service, and outpatient clinics which occur at the Royal University Hospital, St. Paul’s and City Hospitals. There are distributed learning sites including Swift Current and Regina.

Outpatient clinics are at the clinics of preceptors in GIM and other subspecialties.

There is a longitudinal GIM resident clinic where there is an opportunity to develop office management skills.

Selective and elective blocks allow residents to choose areas where they would like more experience. There are eight blocks of electives (two in R4 and six in R5) and two blocks of selective rotations. You can go out of the province for six months per our postgraduate medical education (PGME) policy.

The academic series is held Wednesday afternoons. The two-year curriculum includes topics that focus on items that are important in the day-to-day clinical practice of a general internist and that will facilitate the transition to individual careers in GIM.

A weekly journal club reviews and critically appraises new and landmark articles.

All residents are required to complete a scholarly project. The project focus can link directly to future career plans.

Testimonial

"The General Internal Medicine (GIM) subspecialty training program at USask has provided me with robust opportunities to further my learning and progress as a resident physician as I get closer to finishing my training. Our program leadership and administrative staff go above and beyond to assist us in this process.

There is a strong emphasis on trainee-driven learning as the program allows flexibility in tailoring your schedule to spend time in clinical areas requiring further exposure as well as electives to focus in on a special professional interest. This is important given the broad scope of a practice that General Internists possess. Through increasing outpatient exposure, community medicine experiences, and junior-attending roles, the program ensures a diverse curriculum to achieve competence across a wide-range of practice types.

The faculty and staff are highly collegial and supportive, and this environment, combined with relatively few trainees, makes for a tight-knit group which benefits the residents to a great degree. I have made relationships with my fellow residents as well as faculty and staff that I hope will last a lifetime!

My time in the GIM program has equipped me clinically, professionally, and personally to embrace moving towards independent practice. I am beyond grateful for my co-residents and the people who make the program possible."

Dr. Preston Njaa, GIM Chief Resident 2023-24.
