Overview

The Saskatchewan Skull Base Surgery Program aims to provide excellent comprehensive, multidisciplinary, compassionate, patient-centered care for patients with conditions involving the skull base in Saskatchewan. These include tumors (vestibular and other cranial nerve schwannomas, pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, skull base meningiomas, chordomas) as well as non-tumour conditions (cerebrospinal fluid leak, encephalocele, superior semicircular canal dehiscence). The program includes specialists in neurosurgery, otolaryngology, neuro-otology, electrophysiology, endocrinology, neuroradiology, neuropathology, and oncology.

Regular multidisciplinary clinics are conducted for patients with pituitary tumors and vestibular schwannomas. The patient is assessed by all relevant specialists at a single appointment, and decision-making is then undertaken collaboratively, along with the patient.

The program is equipped to manage skull base conditions using the entire spectrum of surgical techniques. Surgeons are experienced in fully endoscopic, as well as microsurgical approaches to the skull base. Two PhD electrophysiologists perform electrophysiologic monitoring intraoperatively to provide the highest level of patient safety.

A weekly multidisciplinary neuro oncology conference, during which all neuro oncology cases are discussed, allows additional collaboration amongst specialists in order to optimize the care of patients with tumors of the nervous system.

In addition to clinical activity, members of the Saskatchewan Skull Base Surgery Program conduct ongoing research, particularly in neuro oncology.
