Introduction to the Prince Albert Site
Prince Albert is the third largest city in Saskatchewan and is located 140km north of Saskatoon. It is situated on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River and is often referred to as the “Gateway to the North”. The city is surrounded by beautiful lakes, forest and an abundance of wildlife. The Prince Albert National Park is only 80km north of the city and is a popular tourist and recreation destination.
Every year, Prince Albert hosts up to six 3rd year medical students who cycle through the seven core rotations:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology,
- Surgery,
- Psychiatry,
- Family Medicine,
- Internal Medicine,
- Pediatrics, and
- Emergency.
Because there is only one clerk/rotation, you and your fellow clerks choose in what order you do your rotations. Clerks do longitudinal emergency “call” which means we still do ER shifts when on pediatrics, psychiatry, and internal & urban family medice (generally one evening/week and one weekend/month).
The Site
The Victoria Hospital is our main training site and as the third-largest service district in Saskatchewan, the Vic sees a very diverse patient population. Students get firsthand exposure to trauma, Indigenous health, public health, addictions medicine and prison health. The Vic also has a range of specialty services such as ENT, Urology, orthopedics, opthamology, ICU, NICU and more. Our emergency room is one of the busiest in the province. 90% of visits are urgent, emergent or critical.
Why not! There are so many amazing reasons to want to study and learn in PA including the small program size and ample opportunity to practice your skills. Clerks in bigger centers can sometimes feel pushed to the back. Its a long line to the operating table when you are standing behind three residents, two 4th year students, five other 3rd years and all those pre-clerks shadowing.
The Prince Albert Clerkship program is separate from the SLIC programs. This means we follow a structured rotation and exam schedule, identical to Saskatoon and Regina! Clerks are responsible for finding their own accommodations but Nicole and Dr. Ramji will assist in any way they can.
Clerkship in Prince Albert
- Cultural Diversity: You will be exposed to a variety of different cultures during your training in Prince Albert.
- Longitudinal ER call: With a few exceptions, all the students’ call shifts in Prince Albert are done in the Emergency Department. This provides longitudinal exposure to Emergency Medicine and provides valuable exposure to a large volume and variety of procedures and sick patients.
