Resident Safety Policy

A resident feeling uncomfortable in any situation should inform the Program Director or Program Administrative Assistant so that this can be addressed.

SMA Physician Health Program: The SMA Physician Health Program is a confidential referral, intervention and
support service that helps physicians (including residents) and their families that are struggling with physical, mental,
personal or financial stress. Brenda Senger, Director of the SMA’s Physician Support Program, at Telephone Number (306)
244-2196.

Safe Walk: Safewalk volunteers walk people safely to their destination on or near campus—Sunday to Thursday,
8:30 pm to 11:30 pm (306-966-7233). Outside of those hours, Protective Services (306-966-5555) can provide walking
escorts. This service is free and available to students, staff, and faculty and campus visitors. Royal University Hospital
Security can also escort residents to and from their car in the Parkade if required. They can be contacted through
switchboard (306-655-1000) and they are always stationed at the main entrance of the Emergency department.

Harassment & Intimidation: If a resident perceives any harassment or intimidation they should remove themselves
from the situation and contact the Program Director and Postgrad Medical Education Office. There are a number of
support resources and programs available to residents and families. Please refer to our Department of Surgery policy

Needle Stick Injuries, Fluid Exposure, other injuries: Please seek medical attention immediately and report the
injury to your Program Administrative Assistant. Policies and procedures for reporting work-related injuries & incidents
