About

As a former schoolteacher, Dr. Wenzel strives to ensure a supportive, inclusive and rewarding research environment for all researchers in the laboratory. Dr. Wenzel has been awarded scholarship (e.g., tri-council) funding at every stage of their science career, enabling the laboratory to have personal insights into writing successful scholarship applications. In addition, the laboratory has strong relationships with national and international research organizations that offer rewarding professional developmental programs for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Lastly, Dr. Wenzel is cognizant that every personnel in the laboratory has unique needs in the workplace, as well as different career and life aspirations, and thus encourages an open dialogue that makes sure everyone feels heard and supported.

Outside the laboratory, Dr. Wenzel has led multiple national initiatives over their career. They have been the Chair of the Trainee Communications Committee with the Stem Cell Network, the co-founder of the Canadian Neuroscience Postdoctoral Seminar Series that is financially supported by the Canadian Association for Neuroscience, and the lead organizer of StemCellTalk events in London, Ontario.

Laboratory Opportunities

Want to get laboratory experience in a neuroscience laboratory? Dr. Wenzel always has open positions. If interested in our opportunities, please get in touch here.

Dr. Wenzel’s research is broad, but focusses on three research questions

          1) Can replacing disease microglia with healthy microglia cure disease?
          2) Can patient-derived models provide insight on mechanisms driving the onset of diseases? Can modifying these mechanisms cure a patient’s disease?
          3) How can we modify care systems to improve the lives of Canadians?
