About
Darcy D. Marciniuk, MD, FRCPC, FCAHS, Master FCCP is a Professor of Respirology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Associate Vice-President Research at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Dr. Marciniuk is also the Medical Director of the LiveWell COPD Chronic Disease Management Program in the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
Dr. Marciniuk received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan and underwent specialty training in internal medicine and respiratory medicine at the University of Western Ontario and at the University of Manitoba. He undertook research training at the University of Manitoba under the mentorship of Drs. Magdy Younes and Steven Mink. Upon completing his research training, Dr. Marciniuk returned to Saskatoon where he assumed his current faculty position.
Dr. Marciniuk is recognized internationally as an expert and leader in clinical exercise physiology, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and pulmonary rehabilitation with more than 485 invited international presentations and 270 peer-reviewed publications, chapters, and reviews (Google Scholar h-index 62). Dr. Marciniuk is a past-President of CHEST (2012-2013) and the Canadian Thoracic Society (2006-2007) and past-Chair of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies. He served as a founding Steering Committee member of Canada’s National Lung Health Framework (2007-2011), and member and co-Chaired the 2016 Chest World Congress in Shanghai, China. Dr. Marciniuk was the lead author of three COPD practice guidelines published by the CTS, a panel member of international practice guidelines in COPD (ACP/ACCP/ATS/ERS), cardiopulmonary exercise testing (ATS/ACCP), pulmonary rehabilitation (ATS/ERS), and prevention of acute exacerbations of COPD (CTS/CHEST), as well as many clinical practice guidelines for the management of COPD published by the CTS. Darcy recently chaired a multi-society international guideline on race and pulmonary function testing and is currently serving as co-Chair for a Canadian Thoracic Society Alpha-1-Antitrypsin replacement therapy clinical practice guideline.
As Associate Vice-President Research, Darcy led the development of the University of Saskatchewan’s International Blueprint and chaired the institution’s Pandemic Response and Recovery Team. He is responsible for strategic initiatives to foster and enhance research success at the U of S, including its academic units, research centers and institutes; advancing international research activity and impact, and providing oversight of the International Office; serving as the institution’s CIHR Tri-Council Leader; and provides institutional leadership and oversight for the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).
Dr. Marciniuk is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and Deputy Editor (Outreach) for the journal CHEST. He has been bestowed with the Distinguished Scientist Honor Lecture (2011), the Thomas L. Petty Master FCCP Memorial Honor Lecture (2015), and the Presidential Honor Lecture (2020) by the American College of Chest Physicians, the Founder’s Award (2013) by the Canadian Lung Association, the Christie Memorial Lecture and Award (2016) by the Canadian Thoracic Society, and the Distinguished Researcher Award (2013) by the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan.
