Obtain a Medical Faculty Appointment
Obtaining a Medical Faculty Appointment
Note: The information below does not pertain to faculty recruited to a USFA (university-funded), tenure-track position. That process follows the USFA Collective Agreement as guided by the Office of the Vice Provost, Faculty Relations.
Why do I need a medical faculty appointment?
Accreditation standards require all physicians who supervise medical students and residents to hold a medical faculty appointment. A medical faculty appointment is with the University of Saskatchewan and has rights and responsibilities that go along with it.
- New faculty appointments start as Assistant Professor *
- Ongoing appointment
- You require a regular review of your teaching with the Department Head (or designate)
What are the requirements for a medical faculty appointment?
- Willing to teach students in your clinical practice
- Hold an active license with the CPSS in good standing
- Demonstrate competence in clinical practice (ie. through SHA credentialing/privileges)
- Have the support from your Area Lead and Provincial Department Head
If you do not have a SHA appointment, you may be asked to provide evidence of teaching and clinical competence.
How do I apply?
-
- Send a letter of request to your Provincial Department Head – either through the Area Department Lead (ADL) or copy the ADL
- Provide an indication of your prior teaching experience, where you intend to teach, and what kind of teaching you are doing/intend to do. (This will vary with location and availability of teaching across the province.)

As a faculty member, you will have a profile on the College of Medicine website listing your name and degree, academic title and other details.
