Description:
An Academic Peer Mentor takes a lead in providing academic support for Exchange Students at the School of Rehabilitation Science. This program has been developed in conjunction with the International Student and Study Abroad Centre. The Peer Mentor is part of the support system for Exchange Students. The Academic Peer Mentor is a volunteer position.
Role:
Academic Peer Mentors act as coaches for assisting students integrate into the academic culture of the MPT (e.g., access resources such as PAWS, the library, and the bookstore; introduce unique features of the MPT). The Academic Peer Mentor would accompany the Exchange Student to the Welcome event where the student would meet the International Peer Group. The Academic Peer Mentor would establish contact with the Exchange Student ~2 months prior to arrival and coach the student related to preparation (e.g., answers questions via email or video chat, encourage early acquisition of textbooks).
The Academic Peer Mentor is not responsible for “solving” social, emotional, and health problems.

The International Student and Study Abroad Centre provides a number of supports and services to Exchange Students and the MPT Peer Mentors including the Soft Landing Program and an International Peer Leaders program. The office can be contacted by email.
