Making sense of vaping: The good, the bad and the ugly with Dr. Erika Penz

Numerous headlines and articles are being published every day related to the current vaping crisis. Trying to sort out facts from fiction can be overwhelming for those trying to piece together a sound understanding of the most pertinent issues. The objectives of this MEDTalks lecture will be to 1) provide a history of tobacco and its decline in Canada 2) describe the evolution of electronic cigarettes(vapes) in North America, and 3) discuss the potential health effects associated with vaping. The overall goal will be to have youth, parents and the public leave this lecture feeling more informed about vaping and understand the impact vaping has on our health from an individual and public health perspective.

Dr. Penz is a clinician researcher, assistant professor and Respirologist in the College of Medicine. She attended the University of Saskatchewan for her undergraduate degree, received her medical degree from McMaster University, and graduate degrees from Harvard University and University of York in health policy and health economics. Born in Manitoba and raised in Saskatchewan, she returned to Saskatoon in 2013 to raise her two children and two Labrador retrievers with her husband. Her research focuses on understanding burden of disease in patients with all types of lung disease including COPD, asthma and lung cancer with a particular interest in smoking cessation and the interaction of vaping and smoking among youth.
