College of Medicine

Dr. Marilyn Baetz has been appointed as Interim Dean, College of Medicine. She will hold this role for a one-year term, from Jan. 1, 2024, to Dec. 31, 2024, or until a new dean is appointed.

Dr. Baetz most recently served as the Vice-Dean, Faculty Engagement in the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), a role she has held since Nov. 1, 2019. In this position, she is the college’s senior leader for all matters related to faculty recruitment, retention, and engagement, as well as a liaison between the college and the physician community.

Dr. Baetz is a full professor of psychiatry in the College of Medicine who previously served as the provincial head of the Department of Psychiatry from 2010 to 2019—a joint position with USask and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA). In this administrative role, she strategically led a diverse provincial department of physicians and scientists toward a tripartite mission for education, research, and clinical excellence.

Dr. Baetz is well known at USask and within Saskatchewan’s medical community as an outstanding researcher, a strong leader, and a dedicated mentor. Clinically Dr. Baetz has worked as a psychiatrist for 25 years, during which time she has trained many undergraduate students and residents in psychiatry. Her research interests include mood and anxiety disorders, with a special interest in maternal mental health, and she was among the first researchers in Canada to examine the role of spirituality in mental health, for which she received an international Templeton Award. Dr. Baetz has also been a part of the Maternal Mental Health program since its inception in the former Saskatoon Health Region and has continued her clinical and academic interests in this area alongside her administrative roles.

Dr. Baetz grew up in rural Saskatchewan and completed her Bachelor of Science degree at USask with great distinction in 1984. She was first exposed to the possibility of a career in medicine after working as a hospital dietitian and went on to complete her Medical Doctor degree at USask with great distinction in 1993. Dr. Baetz’s postgraduate training was also completed at USask, and in 1998 she received her Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) designation.

Dr. Baetz is a Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) and a board member for both the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders and the Royal University Hospital Foundation. She has served as a leader in many other capacities as well.
