Dr. Joseph Blondeau
Clinical Associate Pathology

Joseph M. Blondeau, MSc, PhD, RSM(CCM), SM(AAM), SM(ASCP), FCCP is a Clinical Microbiologist and Head of Clinical Microbiology at Royal University Hospital (Saskatoon Health Region) and the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He recently completed 4½ years as Interim Head of the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and holds appointments as an Associate Professor of Pathology, Adjunct Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. He teaches to undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of microbiology, infectious diseases, antimicrobial agents and pharmacology. Dr. Blondeau’s main research interests are in the area of antimicrobial agents and antimicrobial resistance, clinical microbiology and clinical outcomes associated with antimicrobial therapy. One key area of research interest is based on the mutant prevention concentration (MPC) – a novel in vitro measurement that determines the likelihood for resistance selection/prevention when an antibiotic is exposed to high density bacterial populations – such as those seen during infection. To date, approximately 4 million dollars has been raised as part of his research program.

He has published in excess of 160 peer reviewed manuscripts, more than 240 abstracts at international meetings and 5 books. STAT (Steps to Antimicrobial Therapy) is a reference guide summarizing numerous antimicrobial therapy guidelines as published from various expert working groups and is now in its 4th edition (2012). STAT Bovine (2008), STAT Cattle and Swine (2011) and STAT Companion Animal 2nd edition (2014) are published for veterinarians. Dr. Blondeau has given more than 600 invited presentations around the world. Dr. Blondeau is a reviewer for many prestigious journals. He serves as section editor for anti-infective agents for the journal Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs. He is also an associate editor for the journal Expert Reviews in Clinical Pharmacology. Dr. Blondeau was the University of Saskatchewan’s nominee for the Henry Friesen Award and Lecture, an award given by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation. Dr. Blondeau was twice nominated for a University of Saskatchewan student union teacher of the year award.
