Summary

Pre-Clerkship is the first two years of medical school. In Year 1, students gain a solid basis in preparatory clinical medicine and biomedical sciences, while developing clinical skills. In Year 2, students build on the foundations of clinical medicine, develop professional and clinical skills, and become competent in focused physical exams and patient histories. Early patient contact is integrated throughout the program.

Fall Term: First week of August through the end of November.

Winter Term: First week of January through the end of April.

Types of Teaching Sessions

Students work in small groups with a preceptor and simulated patient (SP) to learn, discuss, and practice interview and physical examination skills. Includes:

  • Basic interview and physical exam skills at a beginner level (focused on the healthy adult).
  • Focused Interview and Physical Exam skills (FIPE) focused on specific body systems.
  • Clinical cases of common clinical presentations in specific body systems.

Students work in small groups with a preceptor and SP to learn and develop basic and advanced communication skills. Includes:

  • Basic Communication Skills: Students develop basic communication skills needed to provide patient-centered care.
  • Advanced Communication Skills: Students develop communication skills needed for providing patient-centered care in more advanced and challenging situations involving anger, breaking bad news, perceived barriers to communication, motivational interviewing, and cultural safety.

Learning is student-directed with the facilitator helping to guide groups of 6-8 students through a case. Cases are designed to help students develop a general approach to common clinical problems and basic ethical topics in medicine. Includes:

  • Clinical reasoning cases.
  • Systems focused cases.
  • Ethics.

  • Half day “mini” OSCEs – usually focused on a specific system, occur throughout term.
  • Full day OSCEs – comprehensive, occur at the end of term (late Nov/early Dec and late Apr/early May).

This page is not meant to be a comprehensive list, and we periodically offer sessions that do not fall under the above categories. If you have a special interest that you don’t see reflected here, please let us know as teaching opportunities may exist.

General Information

The Pre-Clerkship team uses SignUp Genius for scheduling purposes. This allows you the ability to choose the session you would like to teach based on your availability. We strongly encourage all tutor create SignUp Genius accounts.

Teaching materials are provided in advance and may vary by session. Examples include: a detailed week-by-week teaching package, cases with facilitator prompts/guides, and outlines of session objectives. Additionally, some sessions include a brief mandatory tutor orientation.

Following most sessions, you will be required to complete a student assessment form on our online system One45, provided by email. The forms generally consist of a checklist with an opportunity to provide comments. For a small number of sessions, students are required to submit assignments or written responses, and grading or narrative/written feedback may be required. Grading expectations will be communicated in advance of a session.

All preceptors are expected to provide students with verbal feedback at teaching sessions.

Remuneration is provided for all teaching sessions with Pre-Clerkship. For each teaching session, payment also includes one hour of preparation/marking time. If you feel that your module or session involves significant marking time outside of this hour, please speak to the appropriate Course Director. All teaching hours are tracked directly by the Pre-Clerkship administrative team and are paid quarterly.
