Join us for the 2023 Clara and Frank Gertler Lectureship in Medicine. 

Dr. James (Jim) Dosman, MD will present on the topic of Housing Conditions in First Nations Communities: Breathing, Sleeping, Being. This is one of the free public lectures at the Highlights in Medicine Conference and is open to everyone.

Established in 2005, the Clara and Frank Gertler Lectureship in Medicine seeks to advance the USask College of Medicine’s strategic direction, with topics that are supportive of and linked to current health and medical trends.

Bio of Dr. James Dosman:

Dr. James (Jim) Dosman earned his MD from the University of Saskatchewan in 1963 and was a family doctor in Saskatoon before specializing in Respiratory Medicine. In 1975 Dr. Dosman became founding Head of the Division of Respiratory Medicine, in 1986 founding Director of the Centre for Agricultural Medicine, in 2006 founding Director of the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture, and in 2011 established the National Agricultural Industrial Hygiene Laboratory, all at the University of Saskatchewan. He was the founding Co-chair of the Canadian Rural Health Research Society. He established the Agricultural Health and Safety Network in Saskatchewan, a farm safety program involving 30,000 families. He worked with the International Labour Organization of the United Nations in establishing an International Code of Safe Practice in Agriculture. From 2005 to 2009 he served on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. In 2007 he was instrumental in founding and is currently President and CEO of Agrivita Canada Inc. In 2013 he completed the American Board of Internal Medicine exams to become Certified in Sleep Medicine. He continues an active medical practice in sleep medicine and research in health and safety of rural and indigenous populations, CIHR (2021).

Lecture learning objectives:

  • To learn more about the opportunities involved with working with First Nations communities.
  • To learn about the OCAP principles of doing research with First Nations communities: Ownership, Control, Acquisition and Possession of data.
  • To learn more about issues involved with housing and health among First Nations people.
  • To learn about efforts that First Nations are making in this area.
