Mentorship has been a significant part of my experience in medical school. There is so much to figure out beyond the material we’re learning. We have to figure out how to balance everything, explore various interests, and learn how to give ourselves some grace when things do not always go as planned. Having people, you can turn to during those moments is a reminder that there is so much we can learn from the people around us.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate is the opportunity to learn from people whose experiences may be different from my own. The relationships we build with other students and mentors can become such an important part of this chapter of our lives, especially when so much of our time is spent focused on academics. I’ve come to value the connections that allow us to get to know each other beyond the classroom, and I think mentorship is a great way to build those relationships.

Building a strong sense of community in medical school means creating a space where we can celebrate each other’s successes, learn from our differences, and show up for one another when things get difficult. With students coming from different backgrounds and experiences, I think there’s so much value in bringing people together and helping them feel like they belong. As a mentorship ambassador, I hope to contribute to a culture where we can be open about the things we’re unsure of and feel comfortable supporting one another through them. Moving forward, I hope to continue learning from the people around me while offering that same support to others.
