Karen Holfeld was born in Leroy, Saskatchewan and completed her high school education at Leroy High School in  1977. She graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan in 1983. She then completed a two year Family Medicine Residency at the U of S and then after a few years of general practice went on to do her Dermatology residency at the University of Ottawa, graduating in 1992. She has practiced in Regina, Saskatchewan since then.

She has served on the Royal College Specialty Committee in Dermatology and also on the Royal College  Examination Committee in Dermatology. She is a member of the Saskatchewan PEP (Practice Enhancement Program) committee for the past eight years. As well, she is Dermatology Section Head for the Regina Qu'Appelle Health District and program director for the University of Saskatchewan Dermatology residency program.
