Society of Rural Physicians of Canada Rural Service award

Dr. Aimee Seguin

 Dr. Aimee Seguin, MD, CCFP-ESS, Meadow Lake, SK

We are thrilled to announce and congratulate Dr. Aimee Seguin, MD, CCFP-ESS, Meadow Lake, SK on winning the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada Rural Service award. Dr. Sarah Lespérance and Dr. Trina Larsen Soles presented the awards at this year's SRPC gala held on Friday, April 19, in Edmonton, Alberta, as part of our 31st Annual Rural and Remote Medicine Conference.

Rural Medical Education Innovation Award

This award recognizes rural faculty members who have created new, or adapted existing, tools, curriculum, or programs, for use in rural-focused teaching and learning. 

Dr. Daniel Irvine

Daniel Dirvine

Dr. Irvine was specifically recognized for his leadership, innovation, and collaborative approach in implementing a SIM program for the La Ronge Family Medicine resident’s academic half-day. Dr. Irvine is a physician in La Ronge, and Assistant Professor of Family Medicine. He was nominated by Dr. Jessica Froehlich.

Rural Partnership Award

This award recognizes rural members (individuals or teams) who work in partnership to advance academic medicine in rural Saskatchewan.

South East Family Medicine Team

 South East Family Medicine Team

The South East Family Medicine Team was recognized for their dedication, innovation, and collaborative approach in mitigating the challenges of a geographically distributed site (Moosomin, Weyburn, and Humboldt) to develop the newest Family Medicine training site in Saskatchewan. L-R: Dr. Mahmood Beheshti (Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Weyburn), Dr. Kristin Foy (Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Moosomin), Dr. Aileen Hamilton (Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Humboldt), and Bobbie McLaughlin (South East Site Program Administrator, Moosomin. The team was nominated by Dr. Sheila Smith.

Award Purpose: The Rural Medical Education Innovation Award recognizes rural College of Medicine (CoM) faculty members who have created new, or adapted existing, tools, curriculum, or programs, for use in rural-focused teaching and learning. More than one award recipient may be selected.

Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Creation of regional/rural simlab program
  • Innovative rotation-specific schedules to provide learner-centred teaching in a local environment
  • Partnering with community members
  • Clinical skills events 

Prize: trophy, rural medicine-branded jacket, and membership to Society of Rural Physicians of Canada (SRPC)

Eligibility:

  1. Nominee is a medical faculty member with the CoM
  2. Nominee lives and works in a rural location in Saskatchewan

Nomination materials will be uploaded below and must include:

  1. 1 Primary Letter of Nomination from a colleague, learner, staff, or team member
  2. 1 Letter of Support from a colleague, learner, staff, or team member
  3. CV
Note: self-nominations are not accepted.

Award Criteria: The Letter of Nomination must address the following:

  1. Evidence of innovation in the creation or adaptation of tools, curriculum, or programs.
  2. Demonstrated impact of the innovation (ex: more learner engagement, community focused, embedded the curriculum in family medicine/longitudinal exposure, improved outcomes, etc).

Selection Process:

  • The adjudication committee will consist of members of the Saskatchewan Medical Association, Committee on Rural and Regional Practice (CORRP) and the CoM.
  • Committee members will use  this adjudication rubric.

Award Purpose: The Rural Partnership Award recognizes rural College of Medicine members who work in partnership in advancing academic medicine in rural Saskatchewan. Nominations can be for an individual or a team (please see eligibility requirements below). More than one award recipient may be selected.

Examples include but are not limited to:

  1. An individual medical faculty member who regularly works with a variety of partners in developing/delivering initiatives relevant to rural academic medicine.
  2. A team who has worked together on one or more initiatives focused on rural academic medicine. 

Prize: trophy, and rural medicine-branded jackets.

Eligibility:

For Individual Nominations:

  1. Nominee is a medical faculty member of the CoM, University of Saskatchewan
  2. Nominee lives and works in a rural Saskatchewan setting

For Team Nominations:

  1. Team members must include at least one rural medical faculty member. Partners may or may not be College of Medicine members, and may be physicians, allied health members, researchers, learners, administrative staff, community members, patients, etc.
  2. Team members can be from a mix of rural and urban settings

Nomination materials will be uploaded below and must include:

  1. 1 Primary Letter of Nomination from a colleague, learner, staff, or team member
  2. 1 Letter of Support from a colleague, learner, staff, or team member
  3. CV (of the rural medical faculty members)

  1. Evidence of authentic partnerships to develop or deliver initiatives that are tied to academic medicine.
  2. Demonstrated impact of the initiative, linked to effectiveness of the partnership(s).

Selection Process:

  • The adjudication committee will consist of members of the Saskatchewan Medical Association, Committee on Rural and Regional Practice (CORRP) and the CoM.
  • Committee members will use  this adjudication rubric.
