Certificate in Global Health

Improving the health of the community by supporting the development of socially accountable health professionals

The Certificate in Global Health is a 2-year course designed for students in the College of Medicine and the School of Rehabilitation Science. This comprehensive program offers a holistic education grounded in anti-racism, anti-oppression, intersectionality, interprofessional & interdisciplinary collaboration, and community engagement.

The program's curriculum emphasizes health equity, social accountability & advocacy, and global citizenship. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to address the needs of populations historically marginalized by oppressive policies. Students will explore the structural drivers of health inequity and understand their impacts on the lived experiences of individuals.

Program Highlights

The Certificate in Global Health includes two in-person foundational courses and three structured practicum placements. These placements emphasize reflection and self-positioning, allowing students to develop critical skills in the following areas:

  • Community Engagement and Advocacy: Enhance cultural competence and engage effectively with diverse communities.
  • Social and Structural Determinants of Health: Understand and address the factors influencing health outcomes.
  • Social Location Awareness/Bias: Recognize and mitigate personal biases to improve health care delivery.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work within interdisciplinary teams to address complex health issues through an intersectional lens.
  • Critical Integration Skills: Apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, bridging the gap between academia and real-world practice.
