Île-à-la-Crosse

COMMUNITY OVERVIEW

treatyTreaty 10

Île-à-la-Crosse is the second oldest community in Saskatchewan following the establishment of the Red River Colony in 1811. It is of exceptional historical note, given its prime access to trading posts located further within the North-Western Territory, which in turn promoted significant interest from both Catholic missionaries and fur trading companies.

HOSPITAL
The hospital opened in 2007 and is part of an integrated services facility that also contains the clinic, LTC, allied health care services, high school, daycare, and remote College of Nursing RN program. It has an ER, 3 outpatient observation beds, 10 acute care beds (including a palliative room and labor & delivery bed). There is also a Family Healing Unit (for social detox), laboratory and x-ray department.
CLINIC
There are 5 physicians based at Natawihin/Nakasuwenik Medical Centre. Day starts at 8:45am with hospital rounds or LTC rounds/meetings/teaching and the clinic day typically ends at 5:00pm. On-call duties start at 845 and you are on call for 24 hrs. This is designated as "home heavy call" but typically learners stay in the hospital for the duration of the 24-hr call. Learners will usually do 2 weekends (one Saturday & one Friday/Sunday) during their rotation with an overall call frequency of 1:4 or 1:5. Point of Care Ultrasound and Simulation Education Sessions are available.
