Room: GB06

Time: 11:30 am-12:30 pm

"Hijacking the genetic code: tRNA deregulation in leukemogenesis"

Presenter:

Dr. Palaniraja (Raja) Thandapani, PhD

Assistant Professor Department of Hematopoietic Biology and Malignancy, The University of Texas

As an independent Assistant Professor in the Department of Hematopoietic Biology and malignancy, Division of Cancer Medicine, my long-term research goals are to define the role of tRNA regulation in normal and malignant hematopoiesis. I have a long-standing interest in studying translational reprograming in cancer. The expertise needed to carry out the proposed studies began to develop while I was pursuing my PhD under the mentorship of Dr. Stephane Richard at McGill University, Canada. A major part of my graduate training involved the characterization of translational modulation of proto-oncogenic mRNAs by RGG/RG (glycine and arginine rich) motif containing proteins in acute leukemias.

Thrusday November 27th

"CO₂-dependent protein carbamates: A molecular mechanism of microbial CO₂ sensing"

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a ubiquitous biological gas that triggers adaptive responses across all domains of life, yet how cells sense it at the molecular level remains largely a mystery. One direct potential mechanism involves the formation of protein carbamates (Prot–CO₂), where CO₂ modifies protein amines to alter protein structure and function. Because these modifications are transient, they are difficult to detect and their roles have remained largely unexplored. In this talk, a chemical proteomic strategy will be presented that maps Prot–CO₂ sites across proteomes, uncovering these protein carbamate sites and providing a foundation for understanding how CO₂ drives molecular signaling in biology.

Presenter:

Dr. Dustin King, Ph.D

Assistant Professor in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University
