 BMI/PRISM Combined Seminar Series

Thursday March 5th

Room: GB06/Zoom

Time: 11:30 am-12:30 pm

Presenter: Dr. Guy Tran Van Nhieu University Paris-Saclay

"Role of actin-based forces and Ca2+ signals during Shigella invasion and rupture of the bacteria-containing vacuole "

Prof. Dr. Guy Tran Van Nhieu is a microbiologist and cell biologist, currently serving as the head of the Calcium Signaling and Microbial Infections team at the Institute for Integrative Biology of the Cell (I2BC), a joint research unit of CNRS, INSERM, CEA, and Université Paris-Saclay at Gif-sur-Yvette, France, ever since 2022.

Prof. Tran Van Nhieu completed his Ph.D. at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI) and pursued postdoctoral research at Tufts University School of Medicine in the United States, before taking research positions at the Institut Pasteur, Paris (1996-2009), Collège de France, Paris (2009-2020), Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay (2020-2021), then at the I2BC., at Gif-sur-Yvette, France. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which pathogenic bacteria, notably Shigella and Streptococcus pneumoniae, breach host cell barriers. His team investigates how bacterial effectors alter calcium signaling pathways and cytoskeletal dynamics to facilitate bacterial invasion, intracellular replication, and dissemination.

Recent aspects of his work includes the characterization of vinculin activation by the Shigella IpaA protein during invasion of epithelial cells, and the role of Streptococcus pneumonia secreted factors during bacterial meningitis . Prof. Tran Van Nhieu has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and served on the editorial boards of journals such as PLOS Pathogens and Frontiers in Microbiology.
