Department of Plant Sciences
A full-time Research Technician is required in the area of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry in the Department of Plant Sciences, College of Agriculture and Bioresources.
Job description and duties: Under the direct supervision of the Research Scientist the technician will carry out standard lab protocols including DNA and RNA extractions, vector construction, recombinant protein expression, protein isolation, purification and characterization. Research also requires growing and care of plants in a green house, phytotron and in the field plots. The research technician will be responsible for data collection and analyses and reporting of results to the supervisor. The technician will be expected to trouble-shoot problems with protocols in conjunction with the supervisor, keep detailed notes on procedures used and results obtained and communicate effectively with all lab members and external collaborators to keep projects on time.
Qualifications and Experience: BSc in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Plant Sciences or a related discipline or biotech diploma and at least three years of experience of working in a biochemical or molecular biology laboratory. Experience in molecular biology techniques including DNA extraction, PCR, gene expression studies, recombinant protein production and purification is expected. The successful applicant will be also be familiar with next generation sequencing strategies, and possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, as well, knowledge of computer programs related to DNA sequence analysis, primer design, linkage mapping, QTL analysis. Must be willing to work outdoors, work flexible hours at busy periods, able to lift up to and including 25 kg and be willing to very occasionally travel outside of the Saskatoon area. A class 5 Drivers license is needed. Experience in the operation of field equipment (tractors, seed drills) and small-plot field experimentation, will be an added asset. Successful candidate will be highly motivated, reliable and well organized person able to work in a multi-disciplinary group environment. Candidates must possess excellent oral and written communications skills in the English language.
Salary and term: One-year term position with the possibility of renewal depending upon performance. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
