Faculty Development wants to help educators teach as effectively as possible in the challenging virtual environment. We hope the following resources will help you do that. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
Teaching with Technology
Whether teaching in-person or online, it is extremely important to plan your session; using learning objectives, set, body, and closure is an excellent way to organize your teaching. We have a Canvas course (Teaching FUN...damentals) with instructional videos to help. Active learning is even more important in virtual environments, and the Teaching FUN...damentals course discusses tips for this as well. You can also visit the Faculty Teaching Resources Toolbox for additional helpful advice.
Quick Tips
Use the College of Medicine template for your PowerPoint slides, which includes a Conflict of Interest slide and helpful presentation tips.
Before your teaching session:
- Arrive early to ensure everything is ready to go on time
- Use the desktop version of Zoom (rather than using URL in browser)
- Practice sharing your slides
- Use Zoom to create whiteboards that help you share your ideas visually in a meeting
- Ask learners to close notifications and apps
During your teaching session:
- Ensure learners can hear you and see your slides
- Enable closed captions to improve accessibility
- Stay focused – keep visual materials simple
- Encourage participation - use names and have learners turn their video on when possible
- Chat, hands up / unmute, non-verbal responses (i.e. thumbs up), polls, breakout rooms, whiteboard, and annotation, etc.
- Embrace the pause and give clear instructions
- Time to unmute, type, etc.
- Look into the camera - ensure your monitor and webcam are at eye level
