The vision of the College of Medicine reads “We are leaders in improving the health and well-being of the peoples of Saskatchewan and the world.” We need leaders in our healthcare system and in medical education that are “emparted with the leadership ability to drive health system transformation.” (From the Strategic Quality Education and Scholarship priority of the CoM). Faculty Development aims to provide support for those faculty who are interested in taking on leadership roles.

Programs

There are many options for leadership development through courses and conferences, graduate programs and seminars.

For Educational Leaders:

Academy for Professionalism in Health Care	Academy for Professionalism in Health Care Faculty Development Certificate Leadership Excellence in Educating for Professionalism (LEEP)
Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)	The AAMC offers a Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Certificate program.
Canadian Association of Medical Education (CAME)	CAME created CLIME 1.0, ICLEM 1.0 and CLIME 2.0 to develop national leaders in health sciences education and are designed to meet the needs of individuals who are engaged in leading initiatives that will promote excellence, innovation, change, and scholarship in Health Sciences. These programs are geared towards Health Sciences educators who are in a position to implement new skills in the workplace.
Harvard Macy Institute	The Harvard Macy Institute offers six professional development courses each year.
Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)	IHI offers the ‘Leading and organizing for Change’ online course with coaching.
Johnson Shoyama	The Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy is a partnership between the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan. View their upcoming event offerings here.
University of Toronto Centre for Faculty Development	The New and Evolving Academic Leaders Program (NEAL): Excellence in Academic Health Science Leadership Advanced Certificate. Get the leadership training you need to succeed in academic health care. In the NEAL program, participants develop the mindsets and capabilities to successfully lead their division, program, research, education or other academic unit and help enable the success of their academic teams. Specifically, they become competent in the four practices of academic leadership: intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational and system.

Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC)	Indigenous Health is a priority area of the AFMC. The AFMC's webpage on Indigenous Health is an excellent source of available resources.
The Indigenous Physicians of Canada	The Indigenous Physicians of Canada organization was formed to encourage and support First Nations, Metis and Inuit youth wishing to become medical doctors, to support those already in training or practice and to promote the work of its members in their many capacities and disciplines.

FAQ

Why is this important?
There is a huge need for physician leadership in the university, in rural communities and within the health care system. Taking on a leadership role can be invigorating and exciting but also overwhelming if you do not have the basic training to assist you in your role. There is a huge body of literature and opportunities to develop as a leader.

Need help?
You can discuss this with your Department Head, contact the SMA for the Physician Leadership Institute courses in your area and talk to a mentor. You can also look at a graduate program or explore the MBA through the Edwards School of Business in SK.
