Tips for Fellows

  1. Download and install the Slack App on your personal device and computer so we can use this to communicate and share.  You CAN use a web browser in a pinch, but the app is a much more pleasant interface.  If you have never used Slack before, never fear.  Here is a useful video to orient you to the app and the environment (ignore the fact it is made for another group).

  2. Download and install 'Zoom' on your personal device and computer.  Zoom is the leader in video communications which features audio conferencing, collaboration, chat and webinars across mobile devices, desktops, telephones and room systems.

  3. Subscribe to the ICE blog

  4. Subscribe to the KeyLIME Podcast (Access archives here)

  5. Add T-TIME (Timely Topics in Medical Education) dates to your calendar and plan to attend.  This is our core curriculum and your opportunity to connect with faculty and other fellows.

  6. The first point of contact to start a unit is the UNIT LEAD.  Provide them with your preferred supervisor(s) and they will do their best to match you with them.  Please understand that we need to balance supervisory duties and our faculty may have times of the year that they can not supervise fellows. If you do not hear back from the UNIT LEAD in a timely fashion, please contact the Program Director

  7. Register for the Foundations 1 self-study component
    • Register for the online modules: Candidates need to register for the self-study online component of this unit by send a request to: ppi@royalcollege.ca
      • This introductory portion of Unit 1 is mandatory before progressing though any other unit material.  In your email, indicate that you require access to the online component of the Clinical Educator Diploma course.  You will be sent a follow-up email once your registration is complete, with further instructions to access the learning environment.  Indicate your preference for English or French.

  8. Please check our homepage regularly to find out about faculty development offerings that can help you with your units, and count towards the formal learning requirements of each unit.

Tips for Success

The following are some insights from previous trainees*

Form a team - Consider working in pairs or small groups on each unit, in order to assist with timely progress through the units.

Keep tabs of your learning activities - Keep careful track of your reviewed resources and in particular any courses, lectures, podcasts or webcasts you attend, as these learning activities count towards the mandatory hours required for each unit. Check out this planning and tracking tool

Use the 'Task Lists' - These will help guide you through required unit activities.  You can find the lists on each Units page or under the 'Complete Set of Documents' page.

Look ahead - Have a look ahead at unit requirements for those beyond Foundations.  Some of the activities or learning sessions you attend can count towards other units.  In other words, some of the unit activities can occur simultaneously or in close sequence.

Ask for help (the earlier the better)!  - This program can feel daunting at times.  Don't be afraid to reach out to Rob or any of the Unit Coordinators for assistance!

Starting and Finishing a Unit

Once you are finished the modules for Foundations, you will head into the other core and elective units.  In order to keep the program informed and help us better help you, please see the below 'Check in' and 'Check Out' system designed by McMaster University CE Program.

Checking In to a Unit

Although the diagram is complex, the process is quite simple:

  1. Once the Unit LEAD has paired with a supervisor(s), complete the "Check In" form and email it to the Program Administrator, Program Director and Unit Lead.
  2. Once you do this, the Faculty Lead and Program Coordinator will update your information with the program.
  3. You and your unit supervisor will then work on this unit.

Checking Out of a Unit

When you are done the unit, you will need to ensure the following are done:

  1. When you are done, your unit supervisor needs to fill out one form:
    • the relevant Unit Completion form and send to the Program Administrator
    • NB: Remember, they need access to your unit reflections in order to complete this form, so don't forget to send these to them!
  2. You will also need to complete two forms:
    • The Unit Supervisor Evaluation form (to be emailed to you by the Program Administrator)
    • "Check Out" form to be emailed to the Faculty Lead & Program Administrator
  3. Once you do this, the Faculty Lead and Program Administrator will update your information with the program.
  4. Repeat the check-in process for your next unit.
